I am putting eLawNetwork on hiatus as I am leaving private practice and have started a new position with Motion Picture Association - Canada. The blog will stay up as a resource on past copyright matters with the disclaimer still applying:

On March 15, 2012 the Copyright Board of Canada released its reasons in a preliminary ruling concerning the ability of Access Copyright to seek a tariff for reproductions of literary works by government employees. On January 30, 2012 Government House leader Peter Van Loan outlined the Government of Canada’s priorities for the upcoming session of Parliament. Surprisingly, he stated that Bill C-11: An Act to amend the Copyright Act was to be passed by April. (READ MORE)

Bill C-32 The Copyright Modernization Act : What have we heard so far?

On June 2, 2010 the Federal Government tabled Bill C-32: the Copyright Modernization Act in Parliament (Bill C-32). Bill C-32 represents a comprehensive set of amendments to the Copyright Act (the "Act"). The aims of Bill C-32 are two-fold. One, to modernize the Act (which has not seen significant amendments since 1997), and two, to facilitate the ratification of two of Canada's longstanding international treaty commitments i.)
