Domain Name - The easy to remember names and words used instead of Internet Protocol (IP) address numbers to identify web sites e.g. eLawNetwork.com. Because the Internet is based on IP addresses, not domain names, every Web server requires a Domain Name System (DNS) server to translate domain names into IP addresses.

Internet Protocol (IP) Address - An identifier for a computer or device on a TCP/IP network. Networks using the TCP/IP protocol route messages based on the IP address of the destination. The format of an IP address is a 32-bit numeric address written as four numbers separated by periods. Each number can be zero to 255. For example, 1.140.78.269 could be an IP address.

TCP/IP - Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is the suite of communications protocols used to connect hosts on the Internet.

Domain Name System (DNS) - The domain name system (DNS) is the way that Internet domain names are located and translated into IP addresses.

URL - A Uniform Resource Locator (URL)is the address of a file accessible on the Internet. The first part of the address indicates what protocol to use, and the second part specifies the IP address or the domain name where the resource is located. For example http://www.Z.com/X.html specifies a web page that should be fetched using the HTTP protocol, while ftp://www.Z.com/X.exe specifies an executable file that should be fetched using the FTP protocol.

HTTP - HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is the underlying protocol used by the intertnet. HTTP defines how messages are formatted and transmitted, and what actions Web servers and browsers should take in response to various commands.

FTP - File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is the protocol used on the Internet for sending files.

Top-Level Domain - Every domain name has a suffix that indicates which top level domain (TLD) it belongs to. Theses are used to designate the type of organization (e.g. com, .net, .org, .edu) or the country of origin (.ca, .us, .uk, etc., as assigned by the United Nations).

Static vs Dynamic IP Addresses - Many IP addresses are assigned dynamically from a pool. Many corporate networks and online services economize on the number of IP addresses they use by sharing a pool of IP addresses among a large number of users. For example, your IP address will vary from one logon session to the next because the number is assigned to you from a pool that is much smaller than your Internet Service Provider’s (ISP) base of subscribers.

ICANN - ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is the private (non-government) non-profit corporation with responsibility for IP address space allocation, protocol parameter assignment, domain name system management, and root server system management functions, the services were previously performed by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA). IANA derived its authority under a contract from the U.S. government which financed the original research network, Advanced Research Projects Agency Network, from which the Internet grew. The need to internationalize the governing of the Internet (among other concerns) led the U.S. government to recommend the origin of ICANN as a global, government-independent entity to manage the systems and protocols that keep the Internet going.
